‘Strong Roots’ by APJ Abdul Kalam – Questions and Answers : We have given six descriptive questions from ‘ Strong Roots’. You can answer all the questions which will be asked in the exam using these questions. This is strong roots suggestion for 2022-23.

Q. Write a note on the childhood days of Abdul Kalam.

Answer: Abdul Kalam was born in middle-class Tamil family in the island town of Rameswaram in the state of Madras. His father, Jainulabdeen possessed great innate wisdom. His mother, Ashiama was an ideal helpmate of his father. They lived in their ancestral pucca house, located on mosque street in Rameswaram. He was one of many children in their family. He was a short boy with ordinary look. His austere father provided him with all necessities. Infact, his childhood was very secured. Sitting on the floor of the kitchen, he ate with his mother. On a banana leaf his mother served him rice, aromatic samber, variety of pickle and a little coconut chutney. Every evening his father would take him to an old mosque for namaz.

Answer : Kalam’s father Jainulabdeen was a spiritual man. People believed his spiritual power. Every evening he went to an old mosque for prayer. When he came out of the mosque, people of different religions would wait outside of the mosque for his advice and help. Many of them offered bowls of water to him. He would dip his fingertips in the bowls and say a prayer. They carried home the chanted water for invalids. Being cured many of them would come to thank him. He always smiled and told them to thank Almighty Allah.

Answer : Kalam’s father, Jainulabdeen was a spiritual man. He could explain the complex spiritual concepts in very simple words. About spirituality he told his son that every human being is a specific element within the devine being. So, we should not be afraid of difficulties, sufferings and problems. If troubles come, we should try to understand the relevance of our sufferings. According to him adversity always gives us opportunity for introspection. He told his son that when human beings think themselves alone, they look for company.

Answer : Kalam’s father Jainulabdeen was a spiritual man. Kalam tried to emulate his father in his own world of science and technology. He tried to understand the fundamental truths revealed the presence of devine power in this cosmos. He felt this devine power can lift up man from confusion, misery and failure and guide him to his true place. Kalam believed that if a man can sever his emotional and physical bond, he can find way to freedom, happiness and peace of mind.

Answer : Kalam’s father would take his son to an old mosque for evening prayer. Kalam could not understand the meaning of Arabic prayer. But he believed that they reached God. His father told that there is nothing mysterious about prayer. He also told that prayer makes a possible communion of the spirit between people. He explained that when a man prays, he should transcend his body and became a part of the cosmos which knows no division. He also said that he acts as the medium to diffuse all evil forces of people through prayer.

Answer : APJ Abdul Kalam recalls his father’s daily routine. His father Jainulabdeen used to get up at 4 am. Then he would read namaz. After the namaz he used to go their coconut Grove. It was about four miles from their house. He would carry home a dozen of coconuts on his shoulders. Then he would complete his breakfast. He maintained this daily routine even when he was in his late sixties.
