Dola Purnima is a famous Odia festival celebrated mainly in Odisha, particularly in the Yadav odia community. It is also known as Dol Jatra or Dol Purnima.

The primary activity taking place over the course of the six-day festival is the worship of Radha and Krishna in the swing festival. Also known as Dola Yatra or Dola Jatra, the festival.
The village deities’ idols, particularly the one of Krishna, are carried to every home in the villages starting on Falguna Dasami day. Abira, a powder with a violet hue, is applied to those carrying the idols and those who are following them. A decorated palanquin called a “Vimana” is used to transport the idols, and musicians and singers lead the procession.
The deity is presented with Bhog/Prasad, or sweets made from the most recent harvest and fruits, in each home. The deity gives out various powdered colours for the Holi festival in exchange.
Festival of Chacheery and Dolatsaba
The four-day deity ritual known as Chacheery begins each day. The culmination of the four-day procession is a swing festival honouring Radha and Krishna. At a gathering spot with swings fixed, idols from various villages assemble. Then, to the accompaniment of devotional music, the gods are swung. The Dolatsaba festival takes place at this time.
Additionally, villages compete fiercely to decorate the Vimanas that the deity is carried around in. A significant occasion related to Lord Vishnu, especially Sri Krishna, is the swing festival. The Puranas state that anyone who attends Sri Krishna’s swing festival is absolved of all sins.
Demon Burning Holipoda, Holika, and Meshapodi
The demon Holika, also called Holipoda, is burned on the Dola Purnima holiday. Another legend links the Holi bonfire in Odisha to the slaying of the demon Mesha. According to legend, Krishna killed and destroyed Mesha, a terror both on earth and in heaven. Mendhapodi or Meshapodi are the names for these.
The following day is when Holi is played, and it is primarily celebrated as the triumph of good over evil. On that day, the idols from the village temple are brought back and painted with organic hues. The procession travels along routes that are completely painted in natural hues. People think that these organic hues have therapeutic qualities.

Lord Jagannath and Dola Purnima
According to ancient texts, anyone who catches a glimpse of Krisnha swinging is absolved of all sins. The four deities inside the sanctum sanctorum of the Lord Jagannath temple in Puri are dressed in Suna Besa and seated on the Ratna simhasan on the auspicious occasion of Dola Purnima at the internationally renowned 12th-century shrine.
The devotees adore the Raja Dhiraj Besa or suna Besa because it depicts divine siblings wearing gold jewellery adorned with diamonds and gems that were taken from the temple treasury. During Dola Purnima, Lord Jagannath is worshipped as Dola Govinda, and Lord Govinda and Goddess Sridevi are set up on the dola bedi. Sevayats and devotees celebrate on the day of the full moon in the month of Falguna.
With the help of this festival, spring is joyfully welcomed and celebrated. In mythology, it is also known as “Basantotsaba” or the spring festival. Contrarily, the Dola Jatra is also regarded as a celebration of the triumph of good over evil. According to Hindu mythology, the demon king Hiranyakashyap ordered everyone to worship him after conquering the planet. But his son Prahallad, a fervent follower of Lord Vishnu, disobeyed him.
Hiranyakashyap was enraged by the child’s defiance and plotted to have him killed with the aid of his sister Holika. She had a boon that would protect her from the fire, so she intended to jump into the flames holding Prahallad in her laps. She didn’t realize that it would only be effective for her, though. Holika paid the price for the evil plan when she and Prahallad entered the fire together. This represents Holika Dahan, when good overcame evil. As a result, the festival takes its name from Holika, and it is observed the day after Dola Purnima.
