Each year Bengali people celebrate their new year on the first day of the Bengali month Baisakha, which usually falls on the 14th or 15th of April each year. This year 15th of April celebrate as the Bengali new year.

The Hijri calendar, which is not a lunar calendar and will not coincide with the harvest, was the calendar that the Mughals used to collect taxes on agricultural activities. Tax payments were challenging for farmers during the off-season. The Mughal Emperor Akbar gave the order to change the calendar in order to make the payment of taxes easier.
A renowned scholar named Fatehullah Shirazi developed the Bengali calendar based on the Hindu solar and Hijri lunar calendars at the king’s request. After that, the people started to observe this festival. The payment of all debts was required on the last day of Choitro.

What the Bengali New Year means
The Bengali calendar gained popularity in the 15th century thanks to Akbar, the Mughal Emperor. The goal was to improve the transparency and simplicity of the tax collection process. Taxes were gathered during the Mughal era according to the Islamic Hijri calendar.

Hijri, on the other hand, used a lunar calendar, so its new year did not coincide with the harvest. The Bengali calendar began with the adoption of the solar Hindu calendar, which made the process of tax collection easier. In Sikh and other Hindu communities, Poila Baishakh is also known as Vaishakhi. In Tamil Nadu and Kerala, it is also observed as Puthandu.

Conclusion: Poila Baisakh is a festival that holds great cultural significance for the Bengali community. It marks the beginning of a new year, and people celebrate it with great enthusiasm and joy.
